You know, my mom (who was a little girl in the 40s) said that brightly colored things (toys, clothes, printed paper items) were a rarity. She saved some little greeting cards that she received when she was a child because she thought the bright colors were so beautiful. With that in mind, I'm sure that when this ad was very effective when it was new.
