As long as we're causing Gene Kelly to spin like a quisinart in his grave..

Here's the pre-release trailer for Xanadu, 1980. The only film he ever regretting doing, in his entire career. Ever.

You thought the movie was awful...Even the trailer is awful! Listen carefully, and you'll hear a terrible attempt to mimic Jeff Lynne / ELO's falsetto voice. I'm guessing this is either what happens when the song's licensing/ownership is unclear at the time when the film is being made, or the original artist doesn't want to have shit to do with the movie. :)

That movie is horrific, a friend of mine brought it over and made us watch it last year. Ugh.

Hey, different strokes baby. It was awful, but I watched it through! I'm pretty sure I could horrify you with some of my favorite movies if it came to it.

The only time I have ever actually had a video rental clerk LAUGH at what I was checking out was when I rented this once (completely for laff value, but I guess he didn't realize that!)

Useless anecdote: So, in first or second grade, our teacher did the old "say a word that starts with the letter" game. And I got X. And I said "Xanadu". And everyone laughed and said it wasn't a word. But the song played on the radio ALL THE TIME even though it was maybe seven, eight years after the movie came out. I think my lip wobbled with the unfairness of it *sighs* Thanks for reminding me.

Aw. Even if your teacher didn't know the song, she should have known the poem and leapt to your defense. You were wronged!

Xanadu was conceptually way ahead of its time. It contained elements of postmodernism long before most of popular culture had any idea of what that was. It's a shame that they did such a rotten job with the writing and acting.

"No, no, a ROCK band with orange jumpsuits and electric guitars!" *cringe* I'm sure glad that rock bands got away from that "matching jumpsuit" thing.

I love this community, BTW. Thanks to all the folks who have taken the time to scan and post things!

The movie is fabulously bad, but the Broadway show is way fun. The problem with the movie is that they took the whole concept seriously and thought they were creating a new kind of movie musical for the next generation (ie all except Gene Kelly who cashed his check and covered his face so no one would see him entering/leaving the studio).

The Broadway show celebrates the fact that the movie is a load of crap and they let loose in full farce mode. Lots of mugging, knowing nudges, pure silliness, but a LOT of fun.

ELO never got enough credit for their cool music. That movie was bad in a great sort of way even though it doesn't make one bit of sense.

When I used to work at Hollywood Video my boss would put this on the store's televisions every few days. It took a lot of time and a lot more alcohol to wipe all the lyrics from my mind, but now it's all come flooding back. Thanks for this.
