I've seen this movie numerous time and plan to catch at least part of it today on TCM. What an actor he is and what a story. Leaving today's events out of things, the sheer bravado performance by Griffith means that he moves into the Great Actor Hall of Fame, IMHO.

Yes, indeed. In the few times in the show the sheriff smoked a cigarette, it was always a little jarring to me.
