Ugggghhh, I hate to say this, but I am pretty sure our old house had something similar for insulation. There was a crawlspace on the second floor (kind of an attic) and we used to play in there and at the very back was a gap full of this stuff and of course Dad said "Don't ever touch it!" but of course I did a few times. It looked just like gravel. I did a quick Google and Zonolite from one particular mine is pretty much on par with asbestos if not asbestos (http://www.cbc.ca/news2/background/consumers/vermiculite.html). :S
And I just now recalled that we had this stuff -- it looked like tiny black, gray and white cubes. We also were warned never to touch it and then our eyes.
:( I guess I will find out in 30 or so years whether it was a problem. It's crazy to think how this stuff was just in everything and everywhere :/ I remember all the older schools in my area being remediated for asbestos back in the 90s.
