It's really grim, all right. I don't think we can get into the mindset of '41, '42,or even the first part of '43 when all seemed very much up in the air. l saw as a kid the yellow towers for air raid sirens built in my small city near the CA coast and when the things blew off for defense drill warnings during the Cold War, we asked what that they were built in the first place for. Grownups said the sirens had been erected in The Real War when "we really didn't know how it would turn out." All us kids haw hawed because, hey, we'd read in our history books that the Axis was defeated and really, didn't everybody at the time know that they would be?
