There was an article in Life magazine in the Seventies where servicemen were buying wigs like this to cover up the high-and-tight military haircut when they were on leave.
I heard from an older hippy generation person that there were what were called "Weekend hippies", who wore long hair wigs on weekends to be hip at the bar but then Monday could go back to their normal job with short hair. Of course they were looked down upon by the "real hippies".
