Yes, most people did. I surmise that this was a “cart” such as radio stations used for “canned” commercials back then - essentially a simplified 8-track cartridge.
This wasn't a bad idea, but it arrived too late. By 1970 consumer electronics such as cassette recorders had already made it passé.
My mom, grandparents & great grandparents did this with reel-to-reel tapes and thankfully the tapes are still around and playable. I had them put onto CD and was able to hear my great-grandparents voices--which I never would have heard otherwise, as they died before I was born.
as the ad shows, she's sending something to a soldier.....you really couldn't phone someone who was serving in Vietnam.....though thinking about it, i think having the apparatus to play the message would be a burden to soldiers....
