I know. The doctors and nurses smoked like chimneys and still do! The only people I see outside hospitals these days in the Smoking sections are docs and nurses. :)
People might have known on some level that cigarettes were bad for you. I've heard references in 1930s films to 'coffin nails' as a nickname for cigarettes.
