Also, I wonder when precisely "Estate Wagon" got split up. In American English now it's a wagon, and in UK English it's an Estate.

I was wondering about "estate wagon" too since I knew it was a UK term but the steering wheel is on the wrong side for there. Maybe it sounded more upscale for Buick buyers, rather than something you took to the train station.
