*mostly* it should be washed by hand, especially the ones that have any sort of silver or gold gilt on it. (those cannot go in the microwave either, *snerk* my father found THAT out the hard way)
it won't necessarily damage the dinnerware, but it CAN cause the patterns on the place settings to fade because of the cleaning agents in the dishwasher detergent.
it's like actual silverware or silverplate utensils cannot go in the dishwasher UNLESS you make sure that they do NOT touch stainless steel, this can cause dark spots because of the cleaning agents causing a chemical reaction. that leads to having to use silver cleaners on them.
really fine place settings should really be washed by hand. i have an assortment of blue willow ware, made by different brands, and i put them all in the dishwasher. i figure, i got them ALL at antique stores, they're ALL a bit worn, i use the hell out of them, let them just show their wear. :D
you're very welcome! mostly, i'd say...if you have beautiful dishes, use them. that's what they were designed to do, and using your beautiful things is the best way to enjoy them.
i have a thing about handkerchiefs, for example. i grew up watching my grandmother ALWAYS having one in her handbag...so in my mind, i honor her by doing the same. and yes, it gets used then washed as necessary, LOL! but it makes me happy. i have probably 20+ of them now, and always look for new ones. :D
i know some bone painted china should be of course hand washed---a great aunt would wash her noritake pink azalea set in the sink that she layered with towels (to replicate the wooden sinks in butler pantries at 'great houses') and she would pat it dry with a cotton towel......
mama had noritake, and after 20 years of hand washing, she finally put it in the dishwasher. it faded (it was a set with pinecones and pine branches on it) after a few years.
then she had an excuse to buy something else, and she went for some gorgeous pfalzgraff stuff that is dishwasher safe. :D
aunt bea's was from her wedding in 1920.....she had the most awesome complete set i ever saw....powdered sugar shaker, lemonade pitcher, candy dish, vases, butter plates, luncheon set, demitasse set, tea pot, cranberry dish, just any kind of speciality dish you could think of and never heard of before....of course the plates, salad plates, smaller plates, soup bowls, fruit bowls, salad bowls, serving dishes, huge platter.....
