I recommend the Sonoran Desert Museum on the west side of Tucson. It is more zoo than museum and it gives visitors the opportunity to see the birds, mammals and reptiles of the area. There is a walk in hummingbird aviary and a wonderful raptor demonstration.
For dining you cannot go wrong with Cafe Poca Cosa or getting a Sonoran dog from one of the many food trucks. Also, try an Eegees. Thicker than a Slurpee and made with real fruit.
MUST SEE: Taliesin West (https://www.zerve.com/TaliesinWest)in Scottsdale, Frank Lloyd Wright's western home and studio.
MUST SEE: The Grand Canyon.
GOOD FOOD: Los Dos Molinos (http://losdosmolinosphoenix.com/) ~3 restaurants, fantastic Mexican food and salsas, worlds apart from Taco Bell or Chevy's style.. Can't say which location is best, maybe South Central?
MUST SEE NATURE: Desert Botanical Garden (https://www.dbg.org/), Phoenix OR Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (https://www.desertmuseum.org/) (near Tucson) OR Sabino Canyon (http://www.sabinocanyon.com/) Park in Tucson.
ODDITY: Meteor Crater (http://meteorcrater.com/), well north of Phoenix
Caution: it will be either hotter than hell (110+ or sandstorm/sudden monsoon). Be careful of the weather. Also beware of the cholla cactus - they do seem to "jump" off and stick to you - they're barbed and very hard to dislodge.
