almost every saturday for 2 years in high school (i was 2 years older than jen, well actually um, i still am....), we'd walk down/up 7th street and meet on 5th avenue (she lived on 1st avenue, i was on 8th avenue) and we'd go downtown to bebop around, starting always with woolworth's for lunch.....they put cherry syrup in coke by hand and you could ask for 'extra' cherry syrup, the fries were always perfect and the burgers were always excellent.....then we'd usually go over to the record department and usually get a 45....then go wander downtown the rest of the afternoon......

Sweet post! What fine times those were.

And the lunch counter had the round seats that spun where we were .. I enjoyed their food greatly, simple and good. I still have one of those little cream jugs that came when Mom ordered coffee. I think she or Gran stole it for me. :)

I still have two little 6-ounce Dunkin' Donuts mugs from before they started serving everything in disposables. (Yeah, I stole them; I coveted them, so I guess I'm going to hell…) The Dunkin' Donuts at 96th and Broadway was the hangout in the 80s; I would go there before or after going to my shrink, who was on West End Avenue.

They had a counter prior to the renovation of this restaurant; afterwards, naturally there is no counter and a 30-minute limit on seating is now in place.

I wish I could hop in a time machine with my 2015 money into the past. I could live like a queen! Look at these prices!

I still have a few little things from Woolworth's: a watering can, screwdrivers, Herald Square brand stationery.

This country became a little poorer when Woolworth's closed. It was the store on EVERY Main Street USA. Every school kid had the same notepads, pencils, etc.

I remember a particularly bad day at work. I had a nice comforting lunch at the Woolworth's luncheonette. The day wasn't so bad after that.

I can't find any of today's fast-foot-joints as comforting as the old luncheonettes.

I LOVED Woolworthd, and my memories are similar to all the above! I remember Jergens bar soap - smelled like cherries-- and the unmistakable sound of wooden floors.
