Oh man, those triggered some nostalgia. I got/built the exploration set. It was the first thing I ever got via mail order. I got it from an ad in a magazine or something. If I recall correctly, it was when we lived in Colorado so that would've been 2nd or 3rd grade for me, so somewhere around 1973-1975.
No. It was all one piece, the Type 1 phaser was molded into the two main halves of the Type 2 as I recall. I used to play with them, even though they were models and not 'proper' toys.
It was a fun set, although it wasn't the easiest to put together. Still, it had great play potential once it was all assembled. Then you could reassemble it after you broke it playing. Grin, it was a plastic Möbius strip!
