I have to admit that I painted the Spock of my model many times. I think it was the whole fondling aspect of the process that was so satisfying. :P

Snicker. I remember at a con, they were doing an interview with Bill Shatner and he sat down right next to me. Suddenly he turned to me and asked, "Who's your favorite ST character?" The captain is actually talking to me! I looked him dead in the eye and said, "Mr. Spock."

Oh man, those triggered some nostalgia. I got/built the exploration set. It was the first thing I ever got via mail order. I got it from an ad in a magazine or something. If I recall correctly, it was when we lived in Colorado so that would've been 2nd or 3rd grade for me, so somewhere around 1973-1975.

I'm guessing around that time as well, as I was in high school when I built them. Did you model have the detachable phaser?

No. It was all one piece, the Type 1 phaser was molded into the two main halves of the Type 2 as I recall. I used to play with them, even though they were models and not 'proper' toys.

I think mine was detachable, although I couldn't swear to it. Mine broke frequently because, like you, I played with them. Best model ever!

It was a fun set, although it wasn't the easiest to put together. Still, it had great play potential once it was all assembled. Then you could reassemble it after you broke it playing. Grin, it was a plastic Möbius strip!
