the dress doesn't need a 'peasant' moniker and there's nothing wrong with a simple, plain wedding dress....it's sort of demeaning, to me anyway, to infer a homemade/plain dress is a 'peasant' dress......
my "white wedding" dress was gorgeous, and mama made it for me. very gunne sax by jessica mcclintock-looking. i think the whole thing ran me $60 (i bought the fabric, she made the dress) and i wore her veil.
my first courthouse wedding (to the GOOD ex)...actually, mama made that one too. we laugh, there's a portrait of me, my daughter, and her cabbage patch doll all wearing dresses made from the same fabric!
the second courthouse wedding (to TheEngineer) i wore a white lace dress...which had been mama's. :D
there is NOTHING wrong with a mom-made dress, as long as it's well-made.
It was a 'look,' all right - the headscarf, 'maxi' length dresses, even if they weren't wedding dresses. And as fallconsmate said, GunneSax was a BIG deal. The fabric sure was pleasant and cool to wear, and the styles were, well, timely.
There's a thriving community of people (including me) who collect and wear Gunne Sax dresses. I must have ten by now! Some of the styles are just flattering!
