Everyone had one of these, didn't we all? I don't think they still make the faux-woodgrain label stock, which is a pity. Click for a larger version in a new window:
Either that or they stuck for so long that the letters were still clearly legible as patterns in the adhesive residue after the label itself finally peeled off.
That thing was wonderful if only because my great-grandfather used it to label all of the circuit breakers in the basement. That was, like, the greatest headache saved of all time, and few other products in this universe could help to accomplish such a feat.
Mine looked like a dog, and the label being made was his little tongue . . . and I haven't thought about it for 25 years now. I love what my brain files away.
This thread takes me back to the magical day in junior high when I got a labeler and put inane little sticker-signs all over the place. I have one inside a box that's stuck to the wood for something like thirty years now.
I remember these. In fact, to double your 70's pleasure, my father used them to label 8-track tape containers and super-8 film reels.
They're still available. (http://global.dymo.com/enUS/Categories/Embossing_Label_Makers.html) If you don't have one, you can always make your own virtual labels. (http://www.acme.com/labelmaker/)
We had one when I was little, and I just bought a new one (at an office-supply store) earlier this year. Sadly, no wood-grain tape, just red, black, blue, and green. I use it ALL the time, though.

Other than that, maybe they put labels that say "radio" on the TV, and labels that say "TV" on the telephone. For hours of enjoyment.
