Oh, my, does that bring back memories. My grandfather had a problem with alcohol, and using regular cough medicine with its alcohol base triggered undesirable effects. So he used Father John's Medicine. Apparently one of the major ingredients was cod liver oil, and the whole thing tasted of licorice. You can still get it, by the way. The main ingredients today is dextromethorphan.
I don't know how many gallons of this stuff I drank, but I have no desire to try it again. Apparently, it must be good for something, though, if it's still on the market.
