Slinky was made by James Industries, and the Mr. Wiggle toys were made by competitor Wilkening Manufacturing Company. Richard James introduced the Slinky in 1946. He trademarked the name but apparently couldn't get a long term patent on the idea and by 1950 other companies were making the toy, though they couldn't use the name Slinky.
We have them now in Stockton and I love watching them negotiating our streets. Not as much fun as the very crowded streets of SF, but still interesting to watch - probably due to too much Slinky time as a kid.
