I always remember 70s-80s US magazines in particular being really into highly-coloured skin. Base was always peach or pink, never any kind of neutral (this is white people I am talking about obvs).
You are onto something. Perhaps it is a nod to the whole time. We were highly aware of color, at least in the 70's and really surrounded ourselves with it. It would only make sense that it would spill over into cosmetics.
