I don't care what the ad says. There isn't anything fresh about Lutefisk. It's some of the unfreshest stuff in existence.

Dick’s Meat Shop could be found at 1609 Fourth Ave. NW. Located across the street from Oak Park News. You could order beef and pork in full, halves or quarters. They also cut steaks to order for special occasions. In December, 1985 a side of beef was $1.25 per pound, hamburger was $.49 a pound and cured hams $1.89 lb. Since it was the Christmas season Lutefisk was available for $1.89 lb.

Soul food feeds, well, the soul. I have Scandinavian heritage, but lutefisk does not feed my soul. I'll go with creamed herring, thank you.

Five years ago, my cousin and his fiance came to visit us from Sweden. He looked at me one night and asked "what the hell is it with Minnesotans and Lutefisk? We don't eat the crap in Sweden". I just shook my head. When I worked at History Theatre in St. Paul, we did a Christmas show where they served a plate of Lutefisk every single show. It took us months to get that smell out of the Green Room.
