My mom grew up in the 50s and 60s and said that basically everyone smoked and drank. Cigarette and booze ads just seem like another world. It was in the late 80s that smoking was banned from workplaces here (can you imagine someone smoking at their desk??) and maybe about ten years since smoking was banned from restaurants. Now when I encounter smoking indoors it is such a huge shock that I don't know how it was ever so normal :S
That's another reason why I love America. In Europe, most people drink and smoke. It was banned from public indoor places maybe ten years ago or so, and it still causes smokers to be angry about it (because don't you dare take away our right to endanger other people's lives in addition to our own!). The result is that people smoke everywhere that isn't indoors: verandas, parks, bus stops, train stations, walking in the streets... it's disgusting and it makes it really unpleasurable walking down the street or waiting for the bus. It infuriates me, especially when I see people with kids - what a stupid and dangerous thing to do given that everybody knows nowadays how dangerous it is. It truly makes me sick on more levels than one.
'In Europe, most people drink and smoke.' That's totally untrue actually. In Britain under 20% of people smoke, and among middle class people it is rare. Many European countries have rates around the 20% mark, and none above around 30%.
Huh, that's interesting. I would never have guessed the figures are that low. Maybe it feels like more because they're all outside smoking in your face? I live between Germany and the UK and there's not a day when I don't see a smoker or have to walk away to avoid standing next to one going about their business. But then again, I'm pretty certain that people who only smoke 'occasionally' or 'socially' wouldn't count themselves as 'smokers' and thus wouldn't tick the appropriate box on the census forms.
Yeah, over the years it has gotten weirder & weirder to watch an old movie and see someone smoking at their work desk or other places that no one would even consider smoking now. A very different time, to be sure.
Oh yeah, I just about fell out of the chair when I saw someone smoking on The Fugitive :-D I can't imagine how gross the world smelled back then! At least vintage ads helps me understand the past better.
