At one time, Raleigh was probably the biggest bicycle company, having bought out their competitors. They also built their components in-house, resulting in a lot of oddball threadings and sizes. You can see a filmstrip about their massive factory here. They also licensed bikes under other names, such as Eaton's Department Store in Canada. My partner and I recently purchased a couple of 1970s Raleigh-built bikes for Eatons, probably versions of the Raleigh Sports, above. Here they are under our tree:
