Socks.  And underwear.  I threw a very inappropriate (and probably sugar-fueled) tantrum one Christmas as a child because SOCKS?? SOCKS?!!?

socks and underwear were a traditional christmas gift in our family! my mother would search for the wildest color socks she could find for my father, who could only wear them on the weekend.

...he was in the navy. white undershirts and underwear, black socks. and the uniform. every day! therefore the wild colored socks and unders for the weekend. :D

Mum's idea of presents while I tried to study and work simultaneously but didn't have a home because lived in a miserable student's room with a ditto community kitchen were exclusively: all kinds of kitchen utensils, crockery, glasses, cutlery etc. My brother who only ever sleeps with nothing on because he really hates pyjamas got...: guessed it§ Pyjamas. Every single year. The Mother Instinct. Infallible.

my daughter gets EVERY year, a set of lotion, bath gel, and body spray of the scent she likes best. after that, i ask her what she NEEDS, or i notice little things through the year that i pick up. she's getting a spoon rest and measure spoons that are decorated skulls this year because she's rebuilding her kitchen. i gave the grandbaby some toys and i sent money for clothes (miss ladybug is 2), oh and rubber duckies because those are just fun. :)

i try to give a mixture of what they may like, and what they need. i figure that's a fair mix. oh, and all the kids get a lifesavers book! daughter, granddaughter, son, future daughter-in-law, and nephew. :D

There is Good Mother Energy (a so-called friend of mine always went on about it because she knows, I don't have kids;) Skull spoons and rubber duckies (whatever those are, I can only imagine) sound great and fav. scent gifts are unbeatable (when it doesn't come over as "wash yourself, for a change" from the wrong person;)
There was an amount of fun in my mum's presents too for I think, she never realised that she gave my brother pyjamas every year or me things I didn't even know where to put so I secretely gave them back and got myself a scent or something else I actually wanted. My sister gave her daughters a workmen's toolbox each and they loved it but of course her girls are sea-captain and horse whisper woman respectively, living in Swedish torps (wooden huts).

My ex-father-in-law gave my ex-husband and his brother a wok each three years in a row til they politely pointed out already owning woks; three or more including the one they had before.

We never told our mum what we thought of our presents and I believe my brother still owns a collection of pyjamas all sizes.

My MIL would buy her kids Lifesavers books for Christmas every year. Cute little tradition.

I remember one year when I was a kid, I got a plethora of socks. I don't know if it started out as a joke between my mom & her siblings, or what, but I got like 10 pairs of socks.

The next year I was handed a present that was long, felt soft, and wasn't very big. I said in the most irritated tone "great. more socks."

turns out it was a stuffed dog I had my eye on. oops!
