Our events for today and tomorrow: My Favorite Christmas Gifts---ads for the favorite gifts you ever got. Also, What I Wanted for Christmas and Never Got---that's self explanatory. AND movie trailers!! Christmas themed movies! (Please put movie trailers behind a cut & if you use the LJ short cut code button remove the [/lj-cut] replace [ with < that they automatically place with the [lj-cut] or it won't cut; if you can't figure it out, no worries!!!) Plus OPEN POST, right here! (And it goes without saying, any other type ad is welcome, you don't have to use those themes) And of course, Christmas ads!

If you've come here from the LJ front page, could you let me know? We're trying out the promo thing. If you're new, please read our few rules here.

OPEN POST!!! Haven't had one in quite awhile. If you're home alone, bored, stuck with relatives or around people who you need to vent about, wanna discuss sports, what's going on in your life, or what's going on in the world, ANYTHING AT ALL, right here is the place. There is no restrictions on language (I'd never last ;) just please treat other commenters with respect. But if you need to post a string of expletives about your Aunt Bertha who treats you like a 5 year old? GO FOR IT!! I'll be home all day today and most of tomorrow (with a short trip out to a buffay). Post memes, NON-vintage ads here, whatever you want!! :)

If life were a Hallmark card. we'd have nothing but season-appropriate weather.

It's been drizzly and blah since I got back to Mass. On the train ride up here, I was expecting a glorious sunrise over NYC. Nope. Totally grey. There were some picturesque 'christmas card' scenes with snow covered fields, trees, etc. in Connecticut. Mostly the weather is annoying me because my car started to leak recently .. I only drive when I'm here, and haven't even been able to use my car at all because it's been too wet to deal with the rainforest and mold garden that sprung up in the freakin car since Thanksgiving. Otherwise, I'm stoked to be on vacation and my family festivities are almost over (today was italian xmas.. the 25th is kind of a non-event for us).

There is a thing they call 'the feast of the seven fishes' - which is exactly what it sounds like, a meal where you prepare 7 different kinds of fish - and that happens on christmas eve, and then everyone goes to midnight mass... tbh, my family never did the fishes or the church part (some people would leave the party to go to mass but we didn't go). My grandmother would have a huge party at her house on xmas eve, with the 42 aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors - basically anyone and everyone was welcome. We'd have a smaller family meal on xmas day but I can't even really recall any traditions or anything, because all the pomp and circumstance would happen the night before. My father was just telling me about the first xmas eve he spent with my mom's family before they were married - he's not italian so I don't think he knew what he was in for. He said that he didn't get home until 6am on xmas morning

BUT OH IN OTHER NEWS! Yesterday I encountered my first JELLO MONSTROSITY in real life!!!! My aunt made some throwback shrimp-mayo-gelatin salad mold.

Haha so many questions. No, I don't think it was made ironically... I think my aunt just wanted to do a retro thing, something she might've had in her childhood? A few people tried it but at the end of the night, it was about 90% still there. I absolutely hate mayo and then the thought of it with gelatin, ugh no thanks. I did not try it - I *should* have taken a picture.. I even looked on fb to see if anyone else happened to have a pic of it but alas no.

I just found this on the internet but it looked this, just in a different mold:

This is the first Christmas without Grandma. She was 97 and 3/4 years old.

It's pretty much Mom, my husky, and me for Christmas which is good since my extended maternal side of the family's fucked up every holiday I can remember.

Oh, and the only difference in the weather in the Twin Cities instead of Ohio is the temperature here's in the mid 30's. At least we haven't needed to run the water overnight.

gifts for my hubby are wrapped, and now i'm trying to get the house cleaned up enough for me to throw dinner in the crock pot and make my last two batches of fudge - one regular, one vegan.

after that i'm making a quinoa tabbouleh to take to the christmas get-together at my father in law's house; i don't like ham, and my sister-in-law and oldest niece are both vegan, so after watching them go hungry one year (my FIL is a lovely man, but he has never really grasped the finer points of veganism and still uses butter and milk and stuff in his cooking) i started making a point to bring something we could eat.

the weather here in florida is stupidly un-seasonal. cloudy and something like 80f, so i've got shorts on and the AC running. ugh.

80 is honestly a little warm - it's typically in the 60s/70s during the day this time of year, but the humidity is making it completely miserable. :/

the fudge is surprisingly simple - it's just fantasy fudge, but half semisweet and half 60% chocolate chips (ghirardelli ftw!). regular marshmallows plus a teaspoon of corn syrup substitutes perfectly for marshmallow fluff. :)

I too am jelly of 80. I have a lot of family spread around Florida.

When we would come down at this time, or as late as February they would look at us strangle for wanting to go in their pool. Just because the water was only 70!

LOL. the springs we swim in when summer is at its peak are around 70 and it's definitely chilly after extended exposure, but i grew up in colorado so i totally get that perspective shift as far as what's cold and what's not. :)

80 would be great if it wasn't so effing humid, but it's crazy humid and therefore totally miserable. i finally turned on the AC in the house because my feet were sticking to the kitchen floor.

Thanks for putting this up! So far I'm a survivor (of two x-mas quabbles, some but not yet all the food&wine, the latter two obstacles still ongoing;) But, we all know, life is harder than ever at this time of year, whoever we (think we) are & what we try or not to do about it:

This community so often saves my day, I cannot begin to say how much it means to me. I'd even go as far as saying, it is, er...: a gift!

Jolly X-Mas!
