YES on the Listerine Shaving Cream…NO on anything Meat—although that suicidal pig is pretty funny/grim.

my mind went WAY down the gutter for the lysol douche mention...

but honestly, i think we could pass on anything meat, since it *can* be really bothersome/hurtful to some people. and i'm ok with sticking to ads that don't trigger people (although that jello salad... *shudders*)

yay for objectifying men in underwears too!

and of COURSE i welcome your emails, dear!

now get to bed, and sweet rest to you. :)

The Tho-Radia one is awesome. I have a suggestion for one from the "patron saint" of early 20th century illustrations, J.C. Leyendecker. His artwork is elegant. While this one isn't obviously an Arrow Shirts & Collars ad or Saturday Evening Post cover, it could have easily been either. His illustrations were all over the Saturday Evening Post for many years.

It turns out an illustration nearly identical to this was used as an Arrow ad. I only see a slight variation in the colors, and the added Arrow name. The ad is very subtle. It doesn't mention shirts or collars specifically. This is from 1929.

OK one more Leyendecker piece. This is a 1922 ad for Ivory soap. I'm not sure if he used a monk to make a play on soap floating and Jesus walking on water or not :D

A further description of this ad that I found did read "Cleanliness is next to godliness: This atypical Ivory Soap advertisement from 1922 features a priest."

I'd also suggest an ad featuring telephone operators and one for an early 1900's era electric car.

bradygirl_12: (Coke bottle (classic))
From: [personal profile] bradygirl_12
Heh heh! Still need a big bottle of Coke and maybe a hamburger for fast food. Sorry I can't offer any examples (I don't have the ability to scan ads) but these ads you're showing already are pretty iconic, at least here at [livejournal.com profile] vintage_ads! :)

P.S. What can I say? I'm a food-and-drink gal! ;)

Several of my favourites are represented here, but I'd go for the Tho-Radia or one of the Leyendecker ones, even in case of doubt. Cut-up Piggy gives me nightmares but so do some of the men's (not all men's but some males') underwear ads and it would be both sexist and unjust of me to prefer the Wanted Maidenform Bra just because it is so Modesty Blaise vs. Calamity Jane...though I'd love to put it onto my bedroom wall as a guest-warning poster.

Also, thanks for not going down the trigger warning/censorship road for it leads straight into Hell and no fun to be found there (though South Park presents it as being placed in Detroit with a gay couple whose relationship can only be called complicated but all they ever do is fight, whine and sob so it lacks sex-appeal).

This is still such a wonderfully free-spirited community, please keep it that way. I'll probably never post any ads but this is one of my fav. communities on LJ to which I keep linking from [livejournal.com profile] theboringclub btw, always hoping, noone minds my mind;)
