i think vicks is awesome, always have a jar it around for cold & flu season to slather on my neck, chest, nose and lungs (i sleep alone, no worries ;) when i get sick....but i have never EVER considered melted some vicks in a spoon and inhaling it!!! 'but officer, i was just inhaling vicks on this street corner!!'....

I can say from experience that Vicks does not go well with a nose that's sore and chapped from constant blowing. Ouch!

We had a vaporizer when I was a kid in the 50s-60s that filled the bedroom with medicinal steam. Which was on top of what Mom had rubbed into our chests. Awesome stuff. :-)

I never used a spoon for Vicks, but we had a vaporizer that was a small ceramic cylinder. It held maybe 8 oz of water plus Vicks. It didn't produce enough vapor to fill the room. I remember having it by my bed and leaning over, taking the lid off and breathing in those wonderful vapors. this was more than 50 years ago, but boy do I wish the individual vaporizer was available to day. Now I just slather it on my chest and under my nose if my nose isn't chapped.

i keep a ratty tshirt to wear to bed when i have to use the vick's. (or mentholatum, that's the brand we generally used when i grew up)

so i go to bed and snuggle up to TheEngineer and tell him "i'm smellin extra sexy tonight!" (and he promptly puts on his bipap face mask, LOL)

my grandmother used to put it on our upper lips, but i HATED that because that area would always be RAW due to the cheap-ass tissues she bought. now, i have probably 40 washcloths in the house...so washcloths are the new tissues. hot water in the washer and they're all clean, plus a little bleach for disinfecting. it's all good. :D

My mom used to put some on the lip of a humidifier when we had colds and ran the humidifier all night. I don't know if it helped though!
