This summer, I was up in Winston-Salem where you can find the "grave" of the original Krispy Kreme store in the Old Salem area. I wish someone would rebuild it in its original style.
About 10 years ago, Krispy Kreme opened at least 3 locations in and around Dunkin's stronghold (Boston). Southern-transplants hailed it as the second coming, but they completely flopped. The only location they've been able to keep open in New England is at a casino. I'm sure you could find plenty of Dunkin loyalists who will admit that Krispy Kreme has better donuts - it's more that they don't care about the donuts, they care about the coffee.
The same thing happened in NYC which was sad. They didn't keep up the production of the hot donuts like in the South and I think some stores didn't even make them there. Also it was impossible for them to have a drive-thru at least in Manhattan which is at least 20% of their awesomness.
I do not get the love for Dunkin's coffee either. It's fine when people get it for the office and I'd take them over Starbucks drip coffee but not Tim Horton's.
