combing it through is a good idea, walnut juice stains! (it's made from the hulls of walnuts, if i'm correct...pecan hulls stain, too, but not as bad.)
of course you can rub a cut walnut over a scratch on furniture and it will cover the scratch, so maybe it is from the nuts themselves. food for thought, definitely.
