I miss the Great Signs as well. They really livened up travel.
I'm not fond of product placement, but the film Poltergeist shows a Great Sign in all its nighttime glory at the end. The timing was right-when the film was being made in 1981, Holiday Inn was in the process of phasing the Great Signs out.
We had a modified Great Sign in my childhood hometown, I remember trying to read the sign when I was about four years old. The font confused me, and for a while I thought it said, "Holiday Gun!" I thought maybe it was a gun store...
