I remember my parents always took out Travelers Cheques when we went on trips when I was a kid (70s - 80s). When I went on a vacation for the first time after getting married in the mid-90s, I thought we had to get some. People looked at us like we had two heads.
I remember getting them when I traveled overseas in the 80s. Wow, they were a pain in the butt! It was a hassle to get them and a bigger one to cash them, especially if you were in some little podunk town and it was the weekend. Sometimes hotels would do it, but not always.
We had the same experience in the mid-2000s. Nobody takes travelers cheques anywhere any more and stores HAAAAAATE giving you change when you use them. I guess in the world of credit cards they're completely obsolete.
