I've heard that these were called Space Food Sticks at first, but I like the later name. Very direct. Food Sticks.

I only remember them being called Space Food Sticks—because like, everything was getting named after the space program.

Until now, I've only seen ads that called them Space Food Sticks. I know someone has posted an old tv commercial with an 'astronaut' eating them via a hole in the front of their helmet.

I wonder how early 70s this was. I'd likely have tried to get my mother to buy them back then due to the 'space food' aspect of the things. I don't remember knowing anything about them back then though.

Yeah, that was a great commercial.

My association wit them will forever be the Cosmo magazine mention of the receptionist who saw the prototype of Space Food Sticks, and said, "What's that—a tampon for a midget?"

I think I'll take a miss on these.

Though I guess I did take a miss on these: I don't remember them at all.

Food sticks!

Were these like the >9000 versions of Pocky? Otherwise they sound pretty gross.

More like (IIRC) a slightly lighter and less chewy version of Tootsie Rolls.

I like Tootsie Rolls but that sounds vile.

Yuck! I tried them as a kid. I vaguely recall they had the same texture as Power Bars do now. which is probably why I hate them, too.

I was going to ask about the texture. That does sound awful.

I remember these, as well as Space Food Sticks. I had zero appetite for them way back then, and now, just the name is... yeck.

I'm obviously defective. I loved these as a kid. :P (But I also only ever knew them as Space Food Sticks.)

If you're defective, so am I, because I loved them, too. Used to have them as an after school snack, and like you, knew them only as space food sticks.

Still a better name than "Uncrustables".

Totes! Even a name like Jam Fluffs would be better!

OMG I remember these, as both Space Food Sticks and as Food Sticks. I ate them every day in my school lunches from third grade to sixth grade.. The mint was ok, the orange was orangey but bizarre (but good mixed with the chocolate one), and the peanut butter was vile. Definitely a powerbar precursor and similar in tastes and textures. They (and a lot other unhealthy food) made the man I am today ;-D
