Imagine what would happen if people in the US were asked to make that kind of sacrifice now. It wouldn't be pretty. And that's a shame.

Interesting how wars seemed to wrap up more quickly when the average person was expected to give something up and actually contribute to the war effort with recycling, victory gardens, and buying war bonds.
