Heck yeah! It's to celebrate Douglas Adams. I think I heard about it maybe two years ago. Sci-fi fans seem to keep coming up with these "holidays." A few years ago, only hard-core nerds cared about Star Wars Day (May the fourth) and First Contact Day (April 5th), but they seem to be becoming more mainstream as the various "cons" are becoming more popular and people like George Takei promote them on social media. Hey, any excuse for cake! :)
I don't know if I'll get spammed since I'm the OP, but here's the Towel Day link: http://towelday.org/
i really know nothing about douglas adams except the name of the book he wrote.....i personally---probably because i attended kent state---somewhat try to avoid 'the fourth' stuff because to me, and many others, may 4th is when 4 students were murdered on their campus.....never ever heard of first contact day.....
Yeah a lot of people have forgotten about Kent State, which is unfortunate because what happened there could happen again especially the way police are becoming so militarized. I don't want to go into a big rant about overagressive police tactics, but just yesterday I was reading about a baby boy in Atlanta who was badly injured by a SWAT team when they threw a flash grenade in his crib! Okay, yeah, the adults are somewhat to blame because they should not have been selling drugs, but really, guys? I guess when they say War on Drugs, they damn well mean it. Sheesh! Enough already. Okay, I'm totally off topic now, but anyway.
First Contact Day is a Star Trek thing. It's the day in the future when Vulcans will make first contact with humans. Trekkie thing! :)
They still do, but I prefer white towels because they don't fade. Patterned towels are hard to find these days, though, at least in the cheap stores where I shop.
Anthro (http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/category/towels/home-bath-towels.jsp;jsessionid=CE9F8635AC3A90F3A9DCDB5CD5FCF795.anphlpapp01-store04) is doing patterns and jacquards these days. I will let you guess whether they're cheap.
