I always wondered (and still do) how people know exactly how much money they save on heating/cooling because of new insulation. I've been a homeowner for 20 years now, and I can say with 100% certainty that I do NOT know how much money was saved by us putting in new insulation a few years ago. At best I noticed the bill was vaguely less, but there was no concrete "I saved 14.3% on my heating bill!"
Our electric bill is always roughly the same... in the winter it's high because of the clothes dryer. In the summer I can hang the clothes outside and save on that, but the air conditioner brings the bill back up to what it was. And as far as the propane we use for heating... it goes up and down all the time just because of the price of propane.
Anyway, I can't just stand with the bill in my hand and say "This insulation saved us exactly X amount." It's just not that cut and dried! (Although don't get me wrong, the house is so much QUIETER with the new insulation. I loved that!)
I only know insulation makes a difference because of a 32' x 13' room in the back of the house that remained gutted for about a year. In any amount of sunlight the room would heat up unbelievably. When it was cold out that room would be seriously chilled. I'm hoping to get the pink stuff in the ceiling and walls soon!
