Weekend Event Friday November 1st thru Sunday November 3rd TIME! Our clocks change this weekend (well a lot of ours, I know some were changed last weekend and I know some don't change at all) so ads with clocks, watches, ads dealing with TIME!

So IF your clocks change this weekend, don't forget to set them back this Saturday night before you go to bed!! And yes, since this image was such a 'hit' when I posted it in the Spring, I'm posting it again (I'm rather incorrigible if you haven't noticed) because I think it's TRUE!!! Stop messing with the damn time, leave it alone! It doesn't 'save' energy, it ends up costing money in the long run and I've been reading stories in the British press that they want to discontinue this due to the economic losses. PLEASE stop this crap! It's ridiculous! And even going BACK an hour, isn't everyone sort of messed up for about a week afterwards? /rant

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] fallconsmate reminded me to remind y'all about smoke detector batteries---change them too!!! And let me, miss tia, add, if you don't have one, get a carbon monoxide detector!!! they will also detect smoke....a digital one with a particle reader is around $25 and it is WORTH IT!!!! my furbabies and i were exposed to massive CM poisoning for almost 2 months (i thought i had a persistent flu) til i finally got a clue and got a CM detector and the levels were MASSIVELY dangerous! Off went the furnace, 4 days with no heat (MLK Jr. weekend) til i could get a new one. Only thing that saved us from being killed by CM poisoning was I have a very drafty house and was opening the door 3-4 times a day to let the dogs out.

If you don't have a smoke detector, PLEASE get one!!! And get a CM detector! Sometimes you can get them packaged together and sometimes local fire departments will give them away and/or sell them very cheaply!!!! And if you think your furnace has a problem, look into your community for places that can help you get it fixed, CM poisoning is NOT something to mess around with!!

I don't mind it. I look at the positive - I get an extra hour sleep this weekend!

YES! And I would much rather have daylight at 6pm in the evening rather than at 4am in the morning. Damn tilting planet!

The problem is in the summer there is 15 hours of daylight but in the winter there is only 9 hours. With such a large change in the length of the day there's no happy medium. Around the NYC latitude, if we stuck with standard time the sun would rise at about 4am on 21 June. But if we kept on Daylight Savings time the sun would not come up until 8am on December 21.

I completely agree about DST. I dislike it more all the time. It makes people unproductive, causes them to have more accidents, and costs companies millions to update their schedules. If you have ever done shift work on a weekend, you know what a mess it is. If anyone wonders whether life will come to a screeching halt without it, just look at Arizona. They do not have DST and they seem to be doing okay there. My parents live in Mesa and I envy them that they don't have to change their clocks.

DST is only of much use in the high latitudes. It's essential in Canada!!

I've never heard that daylight savings saved energy, it just saves daylight for later in the summer's day when daylight period stretches out to 15 hours or so.

Exactly. I could get really political here about some other things that the government decided it could "manage" but I have the whole rest of the internet for that.

I think I heard Indiana finally caved. I hope Arizona doesn't.

here's another help you could post...

friend of ours who was a fire chief always reminded us to change out the batteries in our smoke detectors in the spring and fall. that way you KNOW they're working. :)

I'm sorry, but the false analogy of that "Old Indian" is bugging me. There is no claim that the day (or the rug) is longer overall. The claim is that moving that piece allows us to enjoy the benefits of that piece because it is now better located. If in winter, your blanket fails to cover your freezing tootsies, you move the blanket down over them. Come spring, you pull it back up so you don't get sweaty feet.
