Ugggh. Trying to desensitize us to all those artificial ingredients, are we? It's not the names of common ingredients that's the issue. I think the general difference is between when an ingredient occurs naturally in a product versus some global conglomerate wishing to enhance their bottom line.
The only thing that makes artificial strawberry flavour artificial is that it wasn't produced in an actual strawberry. But it's the exact same chemical formula and structure. Legal requirements, not scientific distinctions. It doesn't bear an identifier that you could somehow deduce its origin.
Maybe, but I think I'll stick with actual strawberries. Mother Nature spent millions of years working on the original recipe and I think she's done a pretty damn good job.
Also, if you like raspberry flavoring, turns out that is indeed natural. It comes from a beaver's ass, but it is natural:
That's EXACTLY the problem. It wasn't produced by a strawberry. It is good that the legal requirment is to call it artificial, because it is. If the law wasn't there for sure General Foods would call it "strawberry flavor" and the public would be duped thinking it came from natural strawberries.
