COLOMBUS DAY ADS !!

Colombus Canadian Pacific (354x510)

For some reason, this challenge caught my attention, partly because I've never heard of 'Columbus Day' - it's not something we celebrate over here in the UK. Nothing daunted, I went searching for ads that specifically featured Christopher himself, and surprisingly, came up with several...

Marvellous stuff if you go looking :-

This is  a trade card from a 1912 salesman, for a recliner, of all things !!

Text on back of trade card:

"If you want "solid comfort" you must have a Marks Adjustable Folding Chair. It combines in one a handsome parlor, library, smoking, and reclining chair, a perfect lounge and full length bed, and is altogether the best chair in the wide, wide world. In construction it is simple, durable, and elegant. Are you interested to know more about it ?

Catalogues fully illustrating the Marks Chair as well as a most complete line of invalids rolling chairs, invalid and library supplies will be furnished free on application to: Marks Adjustable Folding Chair Co., Ltd., sole proprietors and manufacturers, 930 Broadway, New York, and 215 Wabash Avenue, Chicago, Ill. Frank E. Marks, pres., R. K. Thompson, sec. & treas. Philadelphia agents, John Wanamaker. San Francisco agents, Burr Folding Bed Co.

Bigelow Lith. Co., Springfield, Mass."

A few famous names have used Christopher Columbus, or referenced him in their advertising campaigns over the years - here's an ad for Eastman Kodak cameras:-

Colombus Eastman Kodak (496x640)

Another one for Rolex watches:-

Colombus Rolex (462x640)

As for geographical equipment and /or instruments, this is a bit more difficult - here's an ad for Sabena, the national airline in Belgium, using a very Art Deco compass :-

All marvellous stuff !!
I wasn't too sure of the age of some of these, but they do have a look of the 70s / 80s about them !!

We hardly "celebrate" or even acknowledge it in the US anymore. My children were out of school for the day, but the school district calendar calls it a professional development day. We're not really supposed to talk about old Chris anymore, at least not in a favorable way thanks to the PC police.
