I wonder what that instant frosting was made of. Sugar, modified starch and hydrogenated palm oil? It looks like a milk-free whip that's sold nowadays.

Yup, sugar, shortening and starch were the main ingredients in those shortening mixes, along with the usual suspects for flavorings, preservatives, and stabilizers. I actually like the white frosting as a filling for maple bars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple_bar)--the Safeway down the street from me when I was a kid sold those.
