Was that look every fashionable, even in the 70s? It doesn't help that the guy on the right looks like he's imagining killing you right now.

I was fairly young in the early 70s and don't really remember much about what I or other folks wore. Striped shirts with plaid/houndstooth coats just seems so wrong. The half turned up coat collar and bow time looks weird to me too.

I think this was a continuation of 60s 'eclectic' where pattern on pattern was absolutely standard and seen as a poke in the eye to rules about dressing well. Do you recall Herb Tarlek from WKRP? This is the sort of stuff he wore. It was seen as loud and tasteless at the time too.

Plaid with stripes? Was popular?

The '70's were a maaaagical decade.

Ok, so it was impractical magic. :p

Funny to see that come around, I'm pretty sure that's something I scanned & posted here years ago. I wish there was ... Like an itinerary ... Of where images had been.

Our mothers must be of the same age-ish. That's where mine came from too!

It's the whole head shape for me. I can see how phrenology came about.

I was thinking he looked like the next Dr. Who. LOL

And he's probably a clerk at K-Mart. Impressions can be everything!

I wear a bowtie now. Bowties are cool.

Was the sewing industry trying to encourage men and boys to sew their own clothes or was the idea to show how to sew things for them?

Probalby both.

The '70s were all about experimenting with your sexuality, and that didn't always mean sex per se, but the perceptions of your sex. Hence, the odd pairings of materials. Only men would pick those!

Only, where's the polyester leisure suit with paisley shirt? (My mother actually sewed by step-dad a powerder blue one... and he wore it!)

Encouraging people to sew is cool either way, but I would love it if there was a trend where men were at least trying it. I wondered if anyone remembered if that was a "thing."

I'd love to see a pic of that suit! Was he balding with a combover and wearing big glasses? Please say yes! :D

Unfortunately not.

He has a thick head of black hair, and never wore glasses. Even at 75.

So he looked nothing like my dad did back then! :D My poor dad began losing his hair in his early 20s and my mother used to give him heck about it and encouraged him to combover. Ugh! That makes it a 100 times worse! There's nothing wrong with being bald!
