Try it! You'll be surprised. Because salt causes the taste buds to swell it enhances the flavor of everything. Add a pinch of salt to chocolate - it's amazing.
Gack! No thanks. All my food snob friends are into doing things like sticking big clumps of salt in their caramel and other stomach-turningly wrong combinations, like chocolate and chili. No thank you, just because peanut butter and chocolate made a good combination doesn't mean everything will.
I tried some salty chocolate and I didn't like it either. All I could think is that there was big chunks of salt in my chocolate.
I never heard of salting apples, but something that my mother did that I never understood was salted lemons. She didn't eat them often (she already had enough problems with her teeth) but now and then she liked to slice a lemon into quarters, pour on the salt and bite in. I tried it once figuring there had to be something to it, but no. I will tell you that it gives you chapped lips instantly. I'm convinced she must have had some sort of vitamin deficiency to crave something like that. Her father used to salt his beer, which also grossed me out and, no, I've never tried it. Fortunately, I don't seem to have inherited the salt-craving gene, but maybe my son did. I get on to him about overusing salt and not tasting his food first. Oh, and he finished all the salty chocolate. Knock yourself out, kid!
I once ate a salted caramel chocolate without knowing what it was. It was fine at first, then the salt hit me and made me gag! It was so far along that I just swallowed it, but I was close to spitting it out. Anyway, salt in my candy or desserts is not a pleasant experience, so I will be avoiding those currently trendy dessert foods with bacon in them, thank you very much.
