Wow, the potato (Wesson) ad really does look good--but, *whole* fried potatoes? That's a new one on me! I have always loved those spattered floors; one of my relatives had one in their kitchen and the garage (well, that was concrete, but they'd stained it, and done the sparkly-epoxy thing?) So many pretty colors! <3

I wondered about whether it was possible to fry a whole potato. I have a feeling it might work if the potato was fairly small, but I wouldn't try it with a baker. There has to be reason this hasn't caught on. Note that the ad says it's something you can try. By the time you figure out it doesn't work, you've already used a bunch of oil--they hope.

I can now report that this does not work. I just tried it in my deep fryer. A regular sized spud, oil temperature 180 degrees C. I fried it until you really couldn't do any more without totally scorching the skin...it was nearly black and started to smell burned . That took about 14 minutes. The inside? Crunchy and raw. Trust me: this does NOT work.

It sure sounded like a recipe for disaster. Even if it didn't start to burn, I'd have to think that by the time the inside was cooked, the outer parts would be greasy and oil saturated.

Perhaps 'medium' sized potatoes were smaller back then.

I sometimes see these "creamer" potatoes at the farmer's market that are very small, about the size of larger marbles (sorry for my super technical description!) They are just potatoes that are harvested when they are really small. I usually have a few of these when I harvest my potatoes so maybe I can try it with a few for "fun."

I figured as much or people would do it all the time. Just too much mass, I guess. Then again, you can deep fry an entire turkey and get great results. The first time I heard of deep-fried turkey, I was skeptical, but it's really good. I've never tried doing it myself because the process terrifies me. I'll leave it to the pros and the amateurs who don't mind setting everything on fire.

So Rich Cork came over to John's Manville and they got gay spatter all over the place. NO SURPRISE THERE. I wonder how well the Lucy PJs sold, because to be perfectly honest, do not want. And I can certainly understand Gramps' hesitation in regard to the chocolate penguin.

i love that voltage ad. really interesting layout.

also, that chocolate penguin sandwich sounds freakin' awesome right now; we've been working outside all weekend trying to prep the house for painting, and august/september are the hottest times of our calendar year, so it's been 100+ pretty regularly and i know now a dozen new places that i have the ability to sweat from.

so an ice cream sandwich would be fabulous. :)

They aren't ice cream (although they are delicious). Still made over here in the UK, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_%28biscuit%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_%28biscuit%29) They do seem smaller these days though :-/

Those "I Love Lucy" pjs would put an end to gay spatter! Or spatter of any kind. Then again, if you and your partner enjoy role playing like you work in a hardware store, maybe. Hey, don't laugh. Couplings, brass nipples, laying pipe--the plumbing section is pretty erotic. Better put down a drop cloth to catch the spatter!

Well, gay spatter is easier to clean up off of tile than it would be from a carpet.
