i have this style mower! though i haven't had to get it out of the garage this year as i'm letting the honeysuckle take over the front yard and in the back and side yard i have a couple weeds taking over that i have to eventually take out via hand and then i'll plant stuff and i'd never use a mower back there anyway with all my toads....

I have a mower like that which I use for the chicken pen. They don't really need their grass cut all neatly plus I don't like the idea of all the fumes right in there with them. My husband uses a riding mower for the rest of the yard though.

I filmed a documentary about my uncle. He told us a story about how his momma would never cut the yard except in the spring when the poppies bloomed. Back in the day, these were 'real poppies' so she was inhaling the essence of opium and heroin while cutting the yard with one of those.

"High as a kite she would get", he said. And she was an ordained Pentecostal minister to boot.

yep, i have a reel mower, too. it works quite well, and the only real argument i have with it is that TheEngineer bought the 14" wide one which is great for "oh, not that hard to push" but not so great at "this actually doesn't take long to mow the tiny bit of yard i have".

so yeah. i use it to make a small path so that the wee beastie can go potty without her little princessy belly touching the grass. ;)

Our reel mower is really hard to get going. If the grass it too wet, forget it. Also, tall grass and weeds get all wrapped around the axle. It's a pain to use, but I get a good workout. I'm trying to get my son to use it more.
