Wow; personals haven't changed much. I loved one I saw from the India Times once, though, advertising a "beautiful homely girl" to cook and clean.

Don't know the time frame of the ad you saw, but homely originally meant like "homebody" or a woman skilled in making a comfy home. At one time it was a complement. Over time, it became a fall back compliment of a woman if you couldn't compliment her beauty, and ended up meaning an ugly woman.
