my grandmother had her mother's machine (like the singer one) and it was retrofitted with the motor and a knee switch rather than a floor pedal. (you folded out the pedal thing and pushed it with your knee)

My aunt has a sewing machine in a table that's very very very similar to the one in the Singer ad. It's a gorgeous piece; I'm not sure if she uses it, but it would probably still fire up if she did.

It's disturbing me that the "children" in the second ad are shaped like dolls. More so than their actual doll.

Learned something new today - "Dorcas societies" were church-based charity groups who would make/gather clothing for the poor. That doll doesn't look terribly needy to me, however unclothed.
