Gotta love old slang. I'm sure you could guess from context, but "larruping" means the same thing as "walloping", or "smashing". In some places, you can still hear it now, though probably not from anyone younger than 60.

As far as the ad copy goes, anyone who has ever quit smoking finds out in a hurry that cigarette smoking does have a profound effect on the digestion. "Quitulence" and "Quitstipation" are two quitting terms often used to describe the results when you give up smokes.
If the best part of eating is smoking then you need to try to score some better food!
Too bad he's mostly known as the guy they named the disease after. It was years before I realized Lou Gehrig was a baseball player. For a long time, I thought it was named for the doctor that discovered it, like so many other conditions.
That's like Tommy John, another baseball player. A pitcher who played for 26 years and won 288 games, he's only remembered for the ulnar ligament replacement surgery, named for him because he was Dr. James Andrews' guinea pig in the early '70's.
