I liked this chick so much that she's one of my icons now!


The thing on her head . . . an interrogation device? An early EEG machine? Nope. She's just getting her hair curled. I remember the first time I saw a permanent wave machine in a museum when I was a kid and to this day the idea of those things terrifies me. If nothing else, this looks horribly uncomfortable.

My ex's grandmother told me that once, during WW2, she was hooked up to a permanent wave machine and the air raid sirens sounded. She said she just sat there and let her hair get curled. She wasn't going to let a buzz bomb alert spoil her hair.

I don't blame her. After sitting that long to get hooked up to the thing, I wouldn't be in any mood to undo it all. Besides, in the time it would have taken to unhook her, the bombing would probably be over with.

She's getting a 'Marcel' wave. Coupons for freebies used to be given out at movie theaters back in the day when people paid a nickel and got 2 features, news reels, cartoons AND air conditioning when that was new. I wonder if anyone ever got the idea to put these in a theater so women could watch movies while getting permed. Probably not. Multitasking wasn't a big priority then. Besides, you could always read a magazine and you definitely could gossip!

I've always though the style that I typically associate with Marcelling was very pretty.

The electrical perm was probably the beginning of the term 'beauty is pain' since having your hair catch on fire was a major problem.

Thanks! I'm not sure when the expression "beauty is pain" came along, but women have been doing painful things to themselves in the name of "beauty" for millennia. I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't some horrible accidents because of these things. Electricity + water + strong chemicals + human flesh = what could possibly go wrong?

Not to mention completely optional fashion-wise. My hair is very straight so I put it through a lot of torture back in the 80s, but at least I never had to be hooked up to a machine! I'm glad straight hair is in style again. Not that I care about it much anymore. My hair is in a ponytail about 90% of my waking hours these days.

I am, too. I can't do much with my hair, so I usually just wash it, dry it, brush it, and go.
