Friday May 3 - Sunday May 5 PEACE: I did not 'select' this out of the 'hat'. I knew it was in the weekend event baggy and purposely picked it out for this weekend (all other weekend selections, except for holiday weekends, ARE selected at random) because of May 4th. Since I live in Akron, attended Kent State, lived in Kent, etc and consider May 4th rather significant in history, I felt PEACE was a good theme for this weekend. (And if anyone in the area is going to be at Kent State on May 4th please let me know so we can meet up!)

This image is burned into many people's minds (and it won a Pulitzer)
When Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young sing about "four dead in Ohio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_%28Crosby,_Stills,_Nash_%26_Young_song%29)", this is what they are talking about.

Date: 2013-05-03 12:56 pm (UTC)Some years the May 4th committee gets things VERY wrong, other years, they do good. This year I looked and saw that Oliver Stone is going to be there. Personally I think the candlelight walk and then vigil they do and start tonight is the most poignant. In that area on May 4th itself there is just an incredible strange energy in the air. It took Kent State until the late 90s til they closed off the parking spots where the students were murdered! And there are still MANY citizens in Kent who feel that not only those students deserved to be killed but that more should have!!!
I think Kent State has finally come to 'terms' with what happened and they have actually created a May 4th visitors center being officially opened this weekend. They tried to make it 'go away' for so long and actually blame those killed; but with time, they have finally gotten a clue. It was total point blank murder, the students were retreating, the guard were even retreating in the opposite when they turned to fire. They have that newly found recording where it sounds like an order of 'Fire' was given, as some guard said they heard the order to 'fire'. And many peoples forget that 2 murdered were not even protesting!
People forget that we have the Constitutional right of assembly and protest. Students DIED and were wounded over this.
