Those very freeways killed Detroit (and many other eastern cities). White flight left the inner core virtually empty and gutted the tax base. Detroit was literally comitting tax hari-kari. Bad planning, bad policy. What a tragic waste. I went thorugh this as a kid in Buffalo. They couldn't build enough roads to escape the city.

Respectfully, speaking as a citizen of Metro Detroit whose parents and grandparents lived there, its destruction wssn't caused by one thing. A combination of the freeways, race riots and bad leadership that wrecked Detroit.
We are trying to rebuild it.
