Rented!? Oh my, that Edison was a rascal! I remember my grandfather talking about lighting real candles on the Christmas tree and everyone had water pails at the ready. They were only lit for 10 minutes or so. Sounds so dangerous.

Not if the tree is fresh and wet, the candles are at branch end with only air above them, and you are present (like on Christmas Eve) at all times. I saw it in Germany in the 80s and it was beautiful.
