My cousin had one of these and I was so envious!

I wasn't completely bereft, though. I did have one of these:

Man, I loved that elevator.

My friend had the townhouse. I loved that elevator, too. I had to make do with shoeboxes for my Barbie's house, which frankly didn't bother me. I enjoyed decorating them.

Although I played with Dawn Dolls more. They fit nicely into shoeboxes.

I still have my Dream House, though it's disassembled and in boxes downstairs. I also still get a Barbie every Christmas...my grandmother started buying me the Happy Holidays Barbie in 1988, and my mom has carried on doing so. This year will be number 25! Mom buys me the Hallmark Barbie ornaments every Christmas, too...I have a tree full of Barbies now. Thankfully my husband is tolerant of all this frippery.

This is what comes of my mother not wanting me to have Barbies as a kid because of body image issues and feminism...I turned out a staunch feminist but also went way overboard on the Barbie collection!

Oh! I had the townhouse, too! Or rather I shared it with my sister. We usually got the same Barbie gifts so we didn't have to fight over them, but the townhouse we had to share. Never wanted the dreamhouse, though.

During the late 80s/early 90s, my best friend had the townhouse and I had the dreamhouse, which is still in my parents' attic. The BF coveted my big rooms and balcony, and I coveted her elevator... so several times we switched houses for a week or two at a time. In hindsight, I realize our parents were incredibly tolerant to keep lugging those things back and forth for us.

My cousin had the townhouse and I was jealous too! I remember making my own Barbie house out of the box from a washer or dryer. I cut out the front, and used part of that piece to make a second story in the house (with liberal use of duct tape) and I made furniture out of books I covered with wash cloths. Eventually I made it into a hospital since the only washcloth-covered-book furniture that looked decent were the beds, and I made nurse's outfits from white paper napkins for my Barbies. My Barbie camper-van became the ambulance. :P

We should start a support group for "Friends of People Who Had the Barbie Townhouse and/or Dreamhouse".

My friend had the townhouse. I was so jealous. I had the horse and the corvette... oh and the "Day to Night" office set.

I had something somewhat similar to this (in fact the kitchen looked almost like the kitchen in that one), but I think it was like a camper or something? My mom got it at a rummage sale.

We could never afford stuff like this (or maybe my parents refused to waste their money on this crap? I can believe that now I'm a parent.), and I wanted the town house with the elevator SO BADLY. *sigh* Obviously, my life was ruined. :D

We were spoiled. I had the dream house and my sister had the townhouse. I have the Barbie van too and it's sitting in my garage. I loved that thing.

My sister had the Townhouse, but I don't think she used it much. I do remember that elevator! I always wanted a Barbie house, but never got one :(

Is the male doll in the dream house a Sunshine Family doll? He looks really familar but I don't remember Ken having hair like that.

The girls across the street had this Barbie Townhouse, and my sister's and I thought it was so cool. But we had to make due with making our own Barbie houses. We'd get egg boxes from the local grocery store (they were nice rectangular boxes w/ a divider in the middle. One on top of the other made a nice 2 story house w/ 4 rooms) and have lots of fun cutting out doors and windows, making curtains, rugs, etc. Wish our mom had taken some photos of our houses.

My dad built my dollhouse. I didn't have Barbies. I was only allowed to have The Sunshine Family so a plastic, prefab house would have been so unorganic! When I was a kid, I sometimes envied my friends with the Barbie stuff, but now I would give anything to have that handmade dollhouse back!

My dad actually build several dollhouses that were donated to needy kids in our community. My mom would also spend about two-weeks straight making doll clothes.
