Write_light's post including a couple fruitcake ads the other day and the discussion of eggnog led me to the idea of doing a fruitcake roundup. I love the stuff - a friend brought me a stollen last week and I polished it off in three days. So, fruitcake: yes please or no thanks? And don't miss the no-bake fruitcake recipe inside made with marshmallows.

I don't care for most fruitcake, but the Collin St. Bakery in Corsicana, TX makes a pretty acceptable fruitcake, especially the kind loaded with pecans!

I bake a fruitcake for my aunt in Phoenix every year, and I sent "this year's model" out there a couple of weeks ago. When she told her mailman what he had delivered, he informed her that it couldn't be a fruitcake, because it didn't come from the right place: fruitcakes come from Collin St. Bakery! (I'm in Wisconsin) She actually unpacked it and showed him. He couldn't believe anyone still did homemade fruitcakes. :)

That's too funny. I want to try making fruitcake some time, but I don't know if I'll get to this year.

The weird thing is that at this very moment I'm watching one of those local interest programs and they are profiling a fruitcake factory in North Carolina. One of the owners says they leave out citron, which is what most people seem to hate. I've heard that before. Whatever citron is (I think it's the little green things) I'll be sure to leave it out.

Fruitcake- yes please! Extra booze, if possible.

My whole family, even the kid who doesn't like pie, will gobble up any sized fruitcake in an hour or less. I simply don't understand the hate.

Me too! Especially on the marzipan. Is fruitcake the same as Stollen?

It's really not a proper fruitcake if they haven't been feeding it rum since october, and it practically oozes booze.

This! A real fruitcake is heavy and moist and gives off a heady aroma of rum or brandy.

I usually make mine in September and baste it at least twice before Christmas and once or twice again before Easter.

I mean the whole point of having fruitcake for weddings is that you can post it to guests who couldn't make it. Indestructible booze cake.

I do French brandy, but otherwise I'm in total agreement!

No fruitcake jokes here - I love the stuff, soaked in rum.

I see dates and I don't think of fruicake, I think of my personal holiday favorite: Date-nut bread. Preferably with hickory nuts or black walnuts, since that is what my grandma always used.

In my Iowa farm family upbringing, nuts weren't something you bought--you went out in the timber and went "nutting" every fall. Then, you came back and sat at Grandma's kitchen table with a mountain of nuts in front of you, cracking and picking your way through it.

ha ha, at first glance I thought the caned fruit cake said "doomsday fruit cake" (because even thought your stuck in a underground fallout shelter for the next couple of months doesn't mean you need to forgo celebration!)

I have to say NO but I've only tasted the mass-produced sort. My family always did a buttermilk glazed fig cake that melted in the mouth. Mmmmmmmm...fig cake...

I lie fruitcake, but it has to be home made, and only a couple of days old, like a regular ring cake but with fruit.

I actually made a pie with oil crust yesterday, similar to that in the Wesson Oil recipe. And that crust is NOT festive, it's a lazy cook's solution.

I wonder from what plant the Wesson oil came from, and why didn't they tell it? Didn't people care at the time? Was it corn, sunflower, or maybe palm oil? Maybe it was a mixture that changed acording to what was cheaply awailable?

my mom makes some kind of fruitcake that you soak in brandy (or maybe whiskey? idk) and light on fire

I only ate it because she'd also do the tradition of hiding a gold ring in it and whoever got the ring got an extra prezzie.
